Sheila Glazov's September Brain Buzz

My husband and I both agree that our favorite month is September. The mornings are crisp, the days are balmy and the evenings have glorious sunsets painted above awesome Autumn palates of color.

September also offers a sense of "Newness" with a New Season, New School Year, Jewish New Year, New Family Structures (children off to college), New Clothes, New Preparations and Projects, which create New Goals, Challenges, Perspectives and Tasks.

It's time to leap into Fall and begin to...
Live Better, Work Smarter, Love More & Laugh Often!

I easily recall my excitement and eagerness as a student and teacher when a new school year begins. However, for too many students fear and worry accompany them to school.

According to my Merriam Webster's New College Dictionary (1960) the definitions of Bully are: 1. Good fellow, fine chap, 2. A blustering, browbeating fellow; one cruel to others weaker than himself, 3. Jovial,  dashing, good or gallant

Sadly, we hear or read more about the 2nd definition than the others. "School Yard" Bullies are now joined by an increasing number of "Workplace" and "Cyberspace" Bullies.

Bully behavior increase as a child's or adult's level of self-esteem decreases. Bullying and other forms of aggressive behaviors that begin in childhood continue into adulthood if proper intervention is not provided and practiced.

According to the Family First Aid, almost 30% of teens in the U.S. (or over 5.7 million) are estimated to be involved in school bullying as either a bully, a target of teen bullying, or both. In a recent national survey of students in grades 6-10, 13% reported bullying others, 11% reported being the target of school bullies, and another 6% said they bullied others and were bullied themselves.

Yellow Brain Bullies: Must demonstrate they are in control of a situation or relationship
Blue Brain Bullies: Engage in passive aggressive behavior to make other people feel badly
Green Brain Bullies: Intimidate others with their sense of superior intelligence
Orange Brain Bullies: Physically dominate others with their size and/or strength

The following are four other personality types involved in "Bully Behavior":
1. The Bully: The aggressor
2. The Bullied Child or Adult: One who is is harassed at school, work or home
3. The Baiter: One who torments, teases or goads to provoke a reaction
4. The Bystander: One who does not get involved out of fear or indifference

Bullying is serious and dangerous! Examining all the elements of a "Bully" incident(s) in a safe and comfortable environment, talking about "Bully Behavior" and seeking help from family members, friends, authorities and/or a professional therapist should always be encouraged.
studentsRejoice & Reflect
I look forward to this time of year because the Jewish High Holidays offer opportunities to rejoice and reflect. The observances and celebrations begin with Rosh Hashanah, the New Year of 5771, and conclude with the observance of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

I gratefully rejoice in the copious blessings of my life, family, friends and career!
A photo I took of McLeod Lake and Mammoth Crest on our recent trip to Mammoth.

The poem below is a Glazov Family favorite and offers thought-provoking words of reflection, now and any time of year. The poem was written by our dear friend, Shirley Blumberg. It was included it our our High Holiday Prayer Book when Jordan and I, and Shirley and Myron Blumberg established the Eastern Sierra Jewish Community Congregation in Mammoth Lakes, California.

Yom Kippur Prayer
I tread gently on the alpine meadow,
And the blue lake does not suffer from my presence.
Do I deal as gently with those I love
And who love me?
I scorn those who leave rutted scars
On tender mountain earth.
Have I left scars
On souls of those who put their trust in me?
I hope not.
But what I meant to be justice
May have been felt as harshness
All my warm interest
As unwelcome intrusion
And my kind helpful guidance
As unpleasant nagging
As perhaps it really was.

A traditional holiday metaphor says: People's names are inscribed in the Book of Life on Rosh Hashanah and sealed into the "Book of Life" on Yom Kippur.

I would like to share my Best Wish with everyone, that your names will be written and sealed in the "Book of Life" for year filled with an abundance of Good Health, Love, Joy, Peacefulness and Laughter!

Brain Book News
mary poppinsIn August, I received a message from Clarissa Passos, GerĂȘncia de Entretenimento at iG, Brazil's largest Internet portal. Clarissa wrote, "I wanted you to know that our test about the Brain Color is a huge success. Actually, it's the most viewed page on iG Delas, our women's webnews portal!  Many readers asked us for a test that could define their children's brain color."

I was delighted to create a Children's Brain Color Quiz for iG; and from the comments I have translated, the quiz has been very well received:

"I liked the test very much. I did it for my son and for the remainder of the members of the family, we were impressed with the results, they showed exactly the personality of each one."

If I had not become an educator, I would have been a librarian. Two of my favorite places to visit and speak are bookstores and libraries. This month I'm looking forward  to presenting What Color Is Your Brain?Workshops at the Greenhills Library and the Woodridge Library.

I'm also excited about incorporating my "Uncork Your Creative Spirit" Creativity Workshop with a What Color Is Your Brain? "Sales" Workshop. Rittenhouse Book Distributors is hosting the workshop for the Follett Medical Bookstore Managers, in October. The managers will discover and determine their Brain Colors and then learn how to Mind Map as a Creative Problem Solving tool for their Brain Color Group Activities.
