Today Is World Diabetes Day 2012!

Today is World Diabetes Day!

The International Diabetes Federation is committed to tackle diabetes from the local to the global level – from programmes at community level to worldwide awareness and advocacy initiatives.

“The activities of IDF aim to influence policy, increase public awareness and encourage health improvement, promote the exchange of high-quality information about diabetes, and provide education for people with diabetes and their healthcare providers. IDF’s awareness and advocacy initiatives are grounded in the experiences of our global network of national diabetes associations.”

The celebration of November 14 as World Diabetes Day was initiated by  International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and WHO. This day is significant because it is the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, in 1922,was instrumental in the discovery of insulin, which is the life-saving treatment for diabetes patients, but it is not a CURE!

WHO estimates that more than 346 million people worldwide have diabetes. This number is likely to more than double by 2030 without intervention. Almost 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.”
