When You Crow, Remember Who Made Your Crowing Possible!

A Favorite Memory

Today’s blog post is one of my favorite memories about my parents’ business. I wrote about this memory in my family business memoir, No Bunk, Just BS (Business Sense), which is my 6th book.

Book Chapter

This post is a story that was written in the 1950’s, but still rings true today. It also is an excerpt from Chapter 2 – Exemplary Leadership Truth and it is Truth #8 – A collaborative leader knows a team working together gets the job done

The Story

When the Rooster Crows

When I was a young girl, I remember a boldly colored poster with a rooster crowing hanging outside my dad’s office at Lab-Line’s second home. It represented one of my father’s leadership philosophies and attitudes.

Arthur S. Hollander, an early Lab-Line personnel manager, wrote a memo about people crowing about accomplishments.

“There’s not a company in the world that is able to operate without one necessary ingredient—People! In any company that produces a tangible product, no one person can design that product, finance it, manufacture it, advertise it, and then deliver the merchandise to his customer himself.

A company is people, working together as a team, helping each other along the way all for their own betterment.

At Lab-Line, there is no place for the person who is forever walking around, patting himself on the back, and crowing for all to hear about how the “Big I” is carrying all of the workload. One of the lost arts in today’s world is the word “WE.” Even at Lab-Line, what “WE” do together as a team is what really counts. Take a look at the sign in the cafeteria and remember what is says:

Message from the Rooster

‘Don’t waste time blowing off about what can’t be done or what you haven’t done yet, get it done FIRST, then start to CROW!!’

Final Thought

But when you do start to CROW, remember all of the other people who made your crowing possible!”
