November – American Diabetes Month

November is American Diabetes Month!

With nearly 26 million children and adults in American living with diabetes, and another 79 million at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, the disease is taking a devastating physical, emotional and financial toll on families and health care.  Sadly, most Americans do not realize that diabetes is serious and devastating disease!

Recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention paint a desperate situation of where we are at, and where we are headed:

  • Every 17 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes.
  • Diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined.
  • Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take steps to Stop Diabetes.

The global fact about diabetes are also alarming!

To support diabetes awareness and education I added a new Diabetes Connection to my website. Visitors can read 10 inspirational stories, my family diabetes story, and fascinating Chinese and Japanese cultural facts about the Ginkgo tree.  I also included a free download of the  Silver Apricot Potion chapter from Princess Shayna’s Invisible Visible Gift. When children and adults read the chapter they are encouraged by learning that “No one is perfect, not even Princess  Shayna… the princess has diabetes.

I am not a researcher who can find a cure. However, I am a mother of a son who has had Type 1 diabetes for 26 years this month, and I am passionate about doing my best to creates diabetes awareness,  education and encouragement through my website, workshops and books.  10% of the royalties fromthe sale of What Color Is Your Brain? and Princess Shayna’s Invisible Visible Gift is allocated to diabetes research and education!
