LIBRARY DIVERSITY DAY TRAINING

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of working with the staff of the beautiful Orland Park Public Library in Orland Park, Illinois.

Kelly A. Cuci, Head of Outreach Services, was the creative meeting planner. I loved her luncheon sandwich menu selections:

The Tom Wolfe
The Tennessee Williams
The Ralph Waldo Emerson
The Studs Terkel
The Amy Tan
The Roald Dahl

Kelly learned about me in the LACONI (Library Administors Conference of Northern Illinois) “Harvest of Resources” Directory, also know as the “Best of The Best” Directory.

“Appreciating the Diversity in the Orland Park Community” was the focus of the staff in-service day.

During the first program I enjoyed observing the staff as they worked with Catherine Popwits, President of Diversity Training & Consulting, Inc. Catherine had everyone playing cards… sounds strange. However, her strategy, teaching techniques, group participation and feed-back was most enlightening and educational.

I was able to take notes about the session and then transfer and apply the information to my program, which was schedule for the afternoon. While the staff was learning about CPR, I took the opportunity to create several specific new PowerPoint slides. I wanted What Color Is Your Brain? approach to diversity and understanding themselves and others to reinforce what the staff learned earlier in the day.

Even though my program was the closer, the staff was partcipatory, attentive and fun to work with. At the closing of the program I asked the staff members to fill out questionnaires about their Brain Colors, how they deal with stress, collaborate with co-workers and communicate with patrons. I will be collating that information and sending the results back to Kelly. Then she will distribute  the information to all the staff members to reinforce their Brain Color knowledge to improve how they handle stress and communication and cooperation with each other and their patrons.

On Tuesday, was thrilled and honored to I received the following message from Kelly…

“Everyone is buzzing around and talking about their colors.

You are a dynamic speaker and made the day perfect.”

A “Tremendous Blue Thank You!” to Kelly, Mary Weimar, the Library Director, Laura Larson, Rana Akkawi, Cathy DiGiorgio, and Mary Adamowski for their “Brainbow Assistance!”

“You and your colleagues made my day perfect!”
