Explaining Death to Children

Today’s headlines about the devastating earthquake in Haiti brought to mind the difficult
task of explaining death to children. Having this experience with my own children,
I understand the challenge and the delicacy with which this situation needs to be handled.

The classic book, The Fall of Freddie the Leaf by Dr. Leo Buscaglia illustrates the delicate
balance between life and death. I believe, this beautifully written story  is timely and timeless,
and is an essential book for every family’s library. It is a simple tale, which gently explains
the often unexplainable process of death that can be appreciated by children and adults.
