During Difficult Times – Be Your Best Self!

Summer Camp Poetry

I was fortunate to attend Mac-Do Lodge Summer Camp for Girls (1932-1969), which was an incredible girls 8 week summer camp in Delevan, Wisconsin. On Sunday’s we would sit around a large campfire and the camp director, Miss Minnie A. Cohen would announce our atheltic awards and also read us inspriational poetry.

Inspriation & Encouragement for Difficult Times

Whenever I experience a difficult time in my life. I turn to my camp poems to give me inspirations and encouragement. Our country and the world is going through a very difficult and challenging time. I hope my readers will find inspiration and encouragement in the poem below.

Be The Best of Whatever You Are

If you can’t be a pine on the top of the hill
Be a scrub in the valley ~ but be
The best little scrub by the side of the rill;
Be a bush if you can’t be a tree.

If you can’t be a bush be a bit of the grass,
And some highway some happier make;
If you can’t be a muskie then just be a bass
But the liveliest bass in the lake!

We can’t all be captains, we’ve got to be crew,
There’s something for all of us here.
There’s big work to do and there’s lesser to do
And the task we must do is the near.

If you can’t be a highway then just be a trail,
If you can’t be the sun be a star;
It isn’t by size that you win or you fail
Be the best of whatever you are!

Douglas Malloch

Closing Thought

“In this poem, Douglas Malloch (1877-1938) shares an encouraging message for readers of all ages. Although we don’t all hold prestigious jobs, we can all be the best at who we are. Our position in life doesn’t make us more or less valuable. The beauty of this world is shown when each person does what he has been called to do and does it with great pride. When we measure our success by the standards of this world, many of us will feel as though we’ve fallen short. Douglas Malloch reminds us that success is measured by being the best at whoever you are. Like many, he came from humble roots, but he used his gift of writing to touch the lives of many people.”
