Diabetes Research and Management Month
Diabetes Connections and THE DASH to Cure Diabetes The synchronicity began with my friend, Caryn Amster, author of Pied Piper of South Shore . Caryn sent me an article that had appeared in the Daily Herald Newspaper. The story highlighted Jenna Scarci and her husband, Jay, as the winners of the Bayer Dream Fund for their innovative diabetes education event, “Lights, Camera, Cure” an interactive diabetes fair held in Elk Grove Village on March 1, 2008. The event, which was one of five diabetes fairs, offered family members opportunities to visit different booths that focus on educating children and adults about living with and managing diabetes. A few days later Jenna returned my call. We had a delightful and encouraging conversation. Jenna told me about experiences with their Diabetes Fairs and as a staff clinical support consultant and patient advocate with Novo Nordisk.
This month is Diabetes Research and Management Month and one of my favorite words resonated with me again… Synchronicity.
I was impressed with Jenna’s remarkable achievement and was eager to offer her my congratulations. Since, the article mentioned that Jenna had been a staff member Northwest Community Hospital Diabetes Clinic, I left a message for her at the clinic.
I was thrilled to share about my books: Purr-fect Pals: A Kid, a Cat and Diabetes, Princess Shayna’s Invisible Visible Gifts and What Color Is Your Brain?, my commitment to JDRF (the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and the allocation of 10% of the royalties from the sale of my books to JDRF.
During the conversation, Jenna encouraged me to get in touch with Karl Rruecht She told me that Karl and his wife, Nancy, organized THE DASH to Cure Diabetes 9 years ago, after their daughter, Molly, was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. Along with their friends, family, community members and sponsors, Karl, Nancy, Molly and Noah Fruecht have raised over $300,000 for JDRF to help find a cure for diabetes and create a remarkable awareness about diabetes.
My husband, Jordan, and I had the pleasure of meeting the Fruecht family last Saturday. Now, we’re looking forward to being part of THE DASH to Cure Diabetes, which will take place Sunday May 25, 2008 at Citizen’s Park on Lake Zurich Road in Barrington.
Please, mark your calendar to Walk, Run or DASH to Cure Diabetes! If you cannot attend and would like to make a contribute, you may contribute at the official website.
