Diabetes Connection
Welcome to the Diabetes Connection, a resource dedicated to making a “connection” with families dealing with the “highs” and “lows” of diabetes management. The mother of a son with diabetes, I am committed to increasing community awareness and education about diabetes.
The Diabetes Connection offers personal insights, stories, information, and the opportunity for you to connect with those who share many of the same experiences.
I have first-hand knowledge and experience with the many challenges diabetes creates. My father (of blessed memory) developed Type 2 diabetes when he was sixty-five years old. In 1985, our eldest son, Joshua, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was fifteen years old. Even our family cat, Luke Skywalker, developed Type 1 diabetes when he was thirteen years old and lived to be eighteen. As you can see, I have some personal history on the subject!
If you or a loved one live with this chronic disease, you know the numerous challenges you and your family face—the tough decisions, the stressful issues and countless health care challenges. I’ve discovered significant ways to find comfort through my family’s history with diabetes. I continually learn as much as I can about the disease, return the guidance and encouragement I was offered.
I am passionate about my goal to help children and their families understand and manage the “highs and lows” of diabetes by reading my books.
Princess Shayna’s Invisible Visible Gift chronicles the journey of a strong and independent heroine who has Type 1 diabetes. Princess Shayna demonstrates that no one is perfect, not even a princess. The princess faces her fears and does not choose to become a victim.
